Leskov was born on February 4 on February 4 in the village of Gorokhov, the Oryol province, in the estate of the nobles of insurance - his aunt along the mother’s line. The mother of the writer, Maria Petrovna, came from an old noble family and was an unusually pious woman, a church "old -style." She paid much attention to religious education in the family. However, the greatest impact on the formation of the worldview of the future writer was had by his grandmother, Akilina Vasilievna, also a “very religious old woman”, who loved to take her grandson with him to the Morilly.

Leskov also loved animals, dogs and birds, especially canaries. And even taught them to sing. Leskov’s childhood of the future writer passed on the estate of insurance. Here, along with cousins, Nikolai received home schooling and education, learned several foreign languages. Then he, along with his parents, moved to the eagle. Father, Semyon Dmitrievich, was a native of the clergy, studied at the seminary, but managed to make a good career as an official in the noble chamber and even get a noble title.
He had a reputation as a fundamental person, read a lot. The future writer entered the service of an ordinary scribe in the Oryol Chamber of the Criminal Court. This experience gave him good material for future works. In the sixteenth year, Leskov lost his father, and the property of the family died in a fire that destroyed most of the wooden city.
