Ali Gasanov Biography

Artist Ali Hasanov: a person playing text: Natalia Babintseva Photo: Pavel Samokhvalov Ali Gasanov - an artist in the medieval sense of the word: a person who is fond of free arts. Moreover, “free” is a key concept for the artist. Ali came up with Azerbaijani performance, made films costumes, was engaged in sculpture, music, cinema, video art. He does not like, when he is entered into the framework, printed by a definition or imposed unambiguous meanings.

Wherever Ali Hasanov was exhibited, whether it be the Venetian Biennale, a tenant between a landscape or a personal exhibition in the museum, he remains faithful to himself. It is not without reason that his projects are of multi -digit names: Vise Versa “On the contrary”, Scatterheart “generous heart”, Omnia mea “all its”, “cathedral spy”. Ali is a real Homo Ludens - a person playing: a spy, provocateur, juggler, turning over.

As an artist, he seeks to go beyond any institutions, destroy comfortable shelters that simultaneously protect and hold in captivity. Naschkatze free metaphors, I conceived the Lavashanalogy project as not having a clear time frame and a narrow topic. He had to combine various practices and meanings - game, performative, sculpture and biort. A kind of reference point was a large cultural project in Georgia, in which we participated with Farhad Farzaliev: artists from around the world were looking for cultural matrices common to the Caucasus.

Then I looked at everything that surrounded me in childhood, and remembered my grandmother Lavashan. I began to work with her as with biomaterial: I conducted a series of experiments, interpreting an old recipe. The first result was a picture where, against the backdrop of the sky, linen hangs: all objects on it are created from Lavashany. As a result, I began to develop a theme in the format of a visual bioexpervation.

I take what was part of me, and then I return it back - this is a kind of tribute. I call myself a busle: I cook myself, I myself. I really like that this work does not have any institution: as an artist I am free and can develop an idea in any direction. I have already created a series of biodegradable sculptures. I thought of making a lavashany shirt-shack-a “second skin”, on which security characters are applied.

This metaphor of insecurity is ephemeral, as well as biodegradability. There is an idea to create playing cards that can be eaten during the game - such an esoteric snack.

In general, there are a lot of ideas: on the one hand, this is a game, and on the other, you constantly find new meanings. ”
